I started developing my own smallpipe in 2003. I spent about eight months or so researching, learning woodturning techniques and discovering the characteristics of different types of wood, especially cocobolo and African blackwood.
A lot of this time was also spent in developing the design. What I wanted was something quite different from any other I'd seen. By the time I made my first full pipe the basic principles were more or less settled. The design was very simple at first but has developed gradually with each new instrument. Every pipe I make is slightly different from the previous one.
